Sibiu (also known as Hermannstadt in German and Nagyszeben in Hungarian) is the capital of Sibiu County and an important city in south of the
Transylvania region of
Romania. In 2007, Sibiu was a European Culture Capital, together with Luxemburg.
The largest of the seven Transilvanian medieval towns, Sibiu was built in the 12th century by German settlers. It has a Germanic character similar to
Sighisoara and
Brasov.
Pedestrian-friendly, Sibiu's cobblestone streets are lined with colorful houses and bounded by imposing city walls and defense towers overlooking the river Cibin. During your walks in the historic center, look for the
houses that appear to have eyes.
