The Thick Tower - Sibiu

The Thick Tower is a point of interest in Sibiu, Romania.


The Thick Tower is a semicircular massive construction, with brick walls (and a stone foundation) and a platform for canons. The construction had several levels for defense, which made it a genuine warfare machine. It was Marcus Pempfflinger who built the tower around the year 1540. It is here that the first theater from Sibiu functioned from 1778 to 1948, when it was destroyed in a fire. The tower was recently renovated and is home of the Sibiu State Philharmonic Orchestra (Thalia Room).
