Maramures is a county in the Transylvania region, Romania.
Maramures County lies in the northern part of Romania and covers four ethnocultural areas: Tara Codrului (south-west), Tara Chioarului, Tara Lapusului and Tara Maramuresului (the north-eastern half of historic Maramures) and the metropolitan area of Baia-Mare. Maramures County is surrounded by counties Bistrita-Nasaud, Cluj, Salaj, Satu-Mare, Suceava and, in the north, by Ukraine. Maramures has a surface of 6.215 square kms and, according to the 2009 census, it had a population of 511.946 inhabitants. Due to its very rich fauna and vegetation, 20 natural reservations were recognized as natural reservations of national interest in 1994 and 1997 in Maramures. The natural reservation Pietrosul Mare is part of the Biosphere Reservations alongside the Danube Delta and Retezat National Park. |
