Eforie is a town and a holiday resort on the Black Sea shore, in Constanta County, Romania. It is located about 14 kilometers south of Constanta and has a population of about 9,500. Techirghiol Lake lies nearby.


In 1966, the city of Eforie was created by merging Eforie Sud with the northern resort Eforie Nord. Many other hotels were built here over the years, most of them during the communist rule.


Northern Eforie

Northern Eforie (Eforie Nord) is the second in size and is a resort town with permanent spas. In the south-west one finds Techirghiol Lake, well known for its mud treatments. Here the tourist can combine recreation with spa activities.


The resort town is placed on the coastline between Techirghiol Lake and the Black Sea, and between Agigea Town to the north and Southern Eforie, approximately 15 km from Constanta.


To reach Nortnern Eforie, access DN39 (E87) and drive 15 km south from Constanta or drive 29 km north from Mangalia. One can take also take the train from Constanta to the train station: Eforie Nord.


The climate can be described as hot summers with temperatures exceeding 22 degrees Celsius and mild winters with some snow. In the summer the sun shines 10-12 hours per day.


Treatment spas are open all year round and are recommended for treating rheumatism, skin problems and calcium deficiencies. The properties of the sea, marine life water composition (chlorine, sulfur, sodium, magnesium) provide for natural treatments.


The beach area is about 3 km in length and between 20-100 m in width with fine sand or small rocks.


Northern Eforie has ample lodging capacity with hotels and bed-and-breakfast locations. Other services available in the area are: car rentals, bars, clubs, nightclubs, coffee houses and restaurants.


Northern Eforie provides tourists with diverse activities such as spas, various sport facilities, pools etc.


Southern Eforie

Southern Eforie is the southern part of the town and is the administrative center of Eforie. It was founded by the aristocrat Ion Movilă in 1899, when he erected a hotel named Băile Movilă (Movilă Spa). In 1928, the spa was renamed Carmen-Sylva, after the pen name of queen Elisabeth of Romania. In 1950, after the establishment of the Communist regime, the name of the city was changed again to Vasile Roaită to honor a railways worker shot dead during the Grivita Strike of 1933. In 1962, the city was renamed yet again to Eforie Sud.
