Bucharest is the capital of Romania and its industrial and financial center. It is the largest city in Romania, located in the southeast of the country, on the banks of the Dambovita River. It has a population of 1,944,367 (in 2000) which makes it the sixth-largest city (by population) in the European Union.


Bucharest was first mentioned in documents as early as 1459 and it became the state capital of Romania in 1862.
